The Heart of Our Neighborhood: Why West Valley Community Services Matters Now More Than Ever

When we picture our West Valley neighborhoods, such as the tree-lined streets of Los Gatos, the quiet foothills of Saratoga, and the bustling innovations of Cupertino, it is easy to see a picture of complete comfort. It is a beautiful place to live. But if you look just a little closer, you will find a hidden reality. Right here in our backyard, roughly 15,000 of our neighbors are quietly struggling to afford the absolute basics of survival, like food and housing.

They are the senior citizens living on fixed incomes down the street, the baristas who pour your morning coffee, and the hardworking parents working multiple jobs just to keep up with skyrocketing rents and grocery bills.
In a region defined by its immense wealth, one in four local families is living on the edge. According to the 2026 Joint Venture Silicon Valley Index, over 25 percent of working-age households in the region cannot meet their basic needs without public or private assistance. That is where West Valley Community Services (WVCS) comes in. WVCS is not just an organization; it is the heartbeat of our community's safety net, and it matters deeply to the fabric of who we are.

Why WVCS is So Crucial to Our Community More Now Than Ever With The New Laws That Will Be Affecting Our Neighbors In Need
For decades, WVCS has served as a lifeline, currently reaching nearly half of our neighbors who qualify for emergency help. We provide a place where people facing their hardest moments are met with dignity, respect, and tangible support.
It is a Launchpad, Not Just a Safety Net: WVCS does not just offer temporary fixes. By providing food, housing assistance, and financial coaching, we give families the stability they need to catch their breath, rebuild, and thrive. Authors Ezra Klein and Derek Thompson note in their book, Abundance, that a reliable safety floor actually empowers individuals to take the economic risks necessary for long-term stability.
Preventing the Trauma of Homelessness: When an unexpected car accident or medical bill hits a low-income family, it can trigger an eviction. WVCS steps in with emergency rental assistance, keeping families safely in their homes and keeping our neighborhoods stable.
Fighting Hunger with Dignity: Our food market operates like a grocery store, allowing individuals and parents to choose fresh, nutritious food for their families in a welcoming, supportive environment.
Right now, federal funding shifts are threatening to make public assistance programs much harder to navigate. In 2025 alone, public programs had to provide over 310 million meals across Santa Clara and San Mateo counties to keep up with regional food insecurity. As legislative changes threaten to introduce more administrative hurdles for families, the bridge that WVCS provides needs to be wider and stronger than ever before.
As Sujatha Venkatraman, our Executive Director, shared at a recent Emergency Assistance Network press conference:
"West Valley Community Services and all the other EANs have built a bridge to keep these families from falling. Today, we are requesting corporations, foundations, and philanthropies to help us widen the bridge and strengthen the safety net to support those who are with us and those who will need us in the months to come.”
How We Can Widen the Bridge Together
Caring for our community is a collective effort. According to research cited by the Emergency Assistance Network, food-insecure households spend roughly 45 percent more on medical care due to preventable ailments. When our neighbors are healthy, housed, and fed, our entire community avoids massive back-end costs on public systems, making our neighborhoods safer and more vibrant.
