The night before Gift of Hope, the venue is anything but quiet. West Valley Community Services volunteers gather after dark, laughter echoing through the halls as decorations go up, tables are arranged, and every detail is thoughtfully placed. By the time the last box is unpacked and the lights are switched off, the space is ready, waiting for morning to bring it to life.

When the lights flicker on and we arrive the next morning, the space is ready. Families begin to gather, and the music starts. I watch children’s faces light up as they receive their passports, which are small booklets that encourage the kids to explore and collect stamps. Instead of lines, there’s movement. Kids pull their parents from one station to the next, excited and proudly accumulating stamps along the way as they travel around the world through games and crafts.

Throughout the day, I see images that stay with me. A child sits perfectly still for face paint, eyes wide as a flower blooms across their cheek. Teens linger at the Teen Table, laughing and connecting in a space that feels like it belongs to them. A senior smiles excitedly as she plays each game. A mom and daughter pair excitedly share their pile of crafts that took them on a journey from India to Ukraine to China. Families gather over multicultural foods, commenting on their favorites and enjoying the exchange of dishes. The room hums with constant conversation, music, and laughter.

Outside, the energy continues. I hear laughter coming from families using the space to hang out together. Parents watch with delight when kids climb up to see the fire truck, thankful for our community heroes and the joy and inspiration they provide the kids. When Mr. and Mrs. Claus arrives, phones come out and time seems to pause for just a moment as families capture photos they’ll treasure. They wait excitedly for printed photos, proof of their family’s fun day!
Inside again, I watch children carefully write thank-you cards, sounding out words and taking their time. At the Kiwanis Book Station, kids clutch their new books like prizes, immediately flipping pages before moving on. These are quiet moments, but they’re powerful.

The final stop of the day is the Gift Card station. By then, passports are filled with stamps and families are content. I see relief on parents’ faces as they receive gift cards that will help stretch their budgets through the holidays. Thanks to early commitments from Target, Inner Wheel, Cupertino Rotary, Los Gatos Morning Rotary, the City of Cupertino, Albertsons-Safeway Foundation, Chanel, Lynbrook Highschool, Girl Scouts, and generous local community and individual donors, we’re able to offer real support with dignity and care.. We are grateful to our generous community whose support warms so many hearts.

As families leave, many stop to say thank you. But what stays with me most is how they walk out: lighter, smiling, and confident. At the end of the day, I’m tired, but I’m grateful. Gift of Hope reminds me why this work matters. For one day, we don’t just offer help; we create space for joy, connection, and belonging.
