City of San Jose's Proposed Budget Cuts

The City of San Jose has proposed a budget that will dramatically affect our ability to serve residents of West San Jose. Currently, West Valley Community Services serves over 2500 clients in West San Jose (in zip codes 95129 and 95130) but if the proposed budget passes, 82% of that population, approximately 2000 people already receiving services, will no longer be able to access the food pantry and other vital programs offered at WVCS. This cut, which would officially go into effect on July 1st, 2010, also means that WVCS will no longer be able to take on new clients from West San Jose, a population that already makes up 43% of our clientele. We believe that our volunteers and community partners can have a great impact on our local decision makers and encourage you all to join our advocacy campaign.

1. Attend the District 1 Community Budget Meeting

City Council Member Pete Constant, from District 1, will be hosting a Community Budget Meeting on Wednesday, April 28th from 7:00pm to 8:30pm at the West Valley Library (1243 San Tomas Aquino Rd. in San Jose).

The agenda will include an overview of the City's annual budget process, a summary of the City's proposed budget, potential impacts on the neigborhood and a session for community members to give feedback on the budget. We hope you can attend and take advantage of this opportunity to provide your input on budget priorities.
